Dave Nicar: Bio

Recording artist Dave Nicar is an artist with a "world view," often taking his music outside the realm of what others might consider "normal"- into his community. Although Dave is a worship leader at his home church in Memphis Tennessee, he is committed to letting people know that there is hope, and healing in all kinds of music. Dave plays regularly in every place that he can. House concerts, parks, festivals, coffee shops, churches, clubs, and bars.

Dave often describes his music as "Thunder Music", and with his powerful, soulful vocals, it’s easy to see why. Dave has an incredible voice – its an instrument not only of passion and power, but also of sensitivity and artistry, often combining sensitive, expressive lyrics combined with a big sound whose goal is to “to strengthen the weak and heal the brokenhearted.”

Brett Manning

 "Voice Coach To The Stars"

 says of Dave:

"Dave, your voice is enviably insane!

And you can quote me on that!"

Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Dave fell in love at a young age, with the music of Elvis Presley, when his father, who went to high school with Elvis, brought home Elvis records from the Radio/TV station where he worked. Dave also became familiar with many of the Southern Gospel quartets that came through town on a regular basis, but he began cutting his musical teeth on the music of the superstars of the R&B era: Elvis, Al Green, Isaac Hayes, and Michael McDonald. Dave notes: "My mom wouldn't let us kids listen to rock music in the 70's, only country, but I was allowed to listen to the Doobie Brothers, cause they had a song called, "Jesus Is Just Alright", and she thought it was a christian song"!

As an artist, Dave has worked and performed with many Grammy and Dove award-winning artists including Third Day, Petra, Bruce Carroll, Dana Key of DeGarmo and key, White Heart, Buddy and Julie Miller, as well as members of the band Skillet. Dave has also worked recently with award-winning blues man, Danny Brooks.

Several years ago, Dave and his band recorded an entire album with christian music legend, Larry Norman, when Larry happened to get stranded in Memphis during an ice storm. Dave remembers: "It was really kind of surreal, Larry got stuck in town after doing a concert during an ice storm, and the hosting church couldn't afford to put him up in a hotel for very long, so our guitar player and his wife took him in and housed him for several weeks. We all kind of ran around town a bit with him, going to Graceland, Sun studios, (where Elvis first recorded), and other Memphis landmarks. Then I found a studio that gave us a great rate and we went in and cut songs that Larry wrote during his visit!" The project was called, "A Moment In Time".

He has also opened for Geffen Recording artist, Matt White in Memphis, and has been a featured Artist on the Sirius Satellite radio “Elvis” channel with Tripp Hurst hosting.

As a worship leader, Dave works with several of the groups at his home church Hope Presbyterian in Memphis, but also works with other artists in the Memphis area to not only mentor them, but to allow members of the church body to be exposed to different styles of music, while giving artists that might not regularly attend church because of work schedules, a friendly environment to share their craft and be loved and accepted.

Dave says: "We do several "Coffeeshop-type concerts a year, in which I bring in local artists that I have worked with in the clubs and bars around town. We charge admission at the door, and pay the artists what they would make at a club, but without the smoke and 'distractions' of a bar. We provide sound, lights and a video of their performance, we feed them and appreciate them, and they are home and in bed before 10:30pm on a saturday night, which is rare for some of these artists!"

Dave is also a sponsored artist with Alzhope.com, an organization dedicated to the support of caregivers of Alzheimer patients. Having lost a grandfather to Alzheimer's, Dave feels strongly about bringing awareness to the needs of the caregivers of these patients not just to the patients themselves.
